Robert W Chambers did write quite a few stories in his lifetime but to be honest he was hardly the best writer around. Despite this his stories were read and probably his greatest contribution with them has not been to readers, but to writers. Chambers came up with some good ideas, but between the actual ideas and putting those down on paper his execution left a lot to be desired, as things seemed to go awry. For writers thus his works have been used to create other much better thought out and plotted tales and you can still see some of these ideas of his pop up today in modern fiction, and even films and dramas.

Here we meet Tressa Norne as she departs Korea, on a boat bound for America. There are a number of elements here that can be used successfully in a good story; after all we have fantasy and magic, some romance, good versus evil, as well as action. But the way these have been put together is more than reminiscent of an eleven or twelve year old writing a composition for school. At times this does become rather episodic as the narrative cannot carry the whole story as a continual novel, so we end up with something that feels like a number of short stories put together to form a fuller story.

At times you do wonder what Chambers was thinking of when he wrote this as you can’t help but laugh as religions and political systems get all mixed up. With the USA appearing as God’s own land and doing its duty to destroy evil wherever it is this takes patriotism to a whole new level. And as we see Tressa become entwined with the Secret Service to destroy this new threat from an old evil by the end of this you are left scratching your head. Tressa seems to go from weak and whimpering to a woman who knows her mind and is all powerful and then back again time after time. Indeed you do wonder why she even had to travel anywhere to fight evil as the evildoers have to come to her to try and defeat her before they can really carry on with their plans. I just wonder why she didn’t sit at home throughout this, put her feet up and battle evil whilst having a nice cup of tea.

In all this is a readable piece of escapism but it is badly executed and does become rather ludicrous.
the slayer of souls was written in 1919 and maker of moons in 1896. this edition has removed 3 of the stories from "maker of moons" for continuity purposes. Robert w. chambers had written hundreds of stories in his lifetime, mostly society stories, romances and historical novels. "the king in yellow" and this edition are the handful of weird fiction that he is most noted for. although these stories are good, they are no means the caliber of poe, bierce, lovecraft or ashton smith. what is frustrating is chambers will write pages of fantastic text then follow it with the most mundane scenes and dialogue. some of the stories have little in common with the rest of the book. but as uneven as the texts are, the otherworldliness are inspiring to read. slayer of souls is the strongest of the stories, is both wonderfully absurd and oddly thrilling. informative intro by Gregory shepard.
Overall this is not a bad book, but it isn't great either. I may be mistaken, but it seems to have been serialized at some point before being laid out as a book. The behaviour and views of many of the characters reflect the commonly held beliefs at the time, especially regarding women and Communists. As I stated before, not bad, but not great. I originally looked it up because it was referenced in a collection of H.P. Lovecraft inspired stories. Just glad it was a free book.
The strange book is not Chamber's best. The story is easy to follow but the reader will find it difficult to make an emotional connection. Evil is represented by powers of an Asian Occult, Russian Communism, and German Barbarism. Good is represented by American Nationalism and a Universalist Christianity. The value of the book is that it reveals Chambers' religious and political leanings.
